I ignored the two Ultramarine-Word Bearer novels that came as tie ins to Betrayal at Calth (are they considered part of the series?) and I ignored Furious Abyss- I feel I've missed little important there based on the plot summaries I've read.īeyond the first five books I'd mention two arcs. I'll just say I wish I didn't read Old Earth. I've basically ignored all of Nick Kymes Salamanders novels because I don't much like what I've read of his writing, but I read Old Earth because I thought it might be necessary for adding context to future events in the Siege of Terra. Even so, a brief google will probably clue you in about them when we get to those final books.

I was going to say The Outcast Dead can be skipped but it looks like a few characters from it might continue to pop up later during the Siege. Tallarn can probably be skipped without missing out on too much. But a lot of them are actually very good and worth reading. Most of the short stories in the compilations add depth to the overall story arc and fill in a few minor gaps, but nothing you can't catch up on yourself, with one exception that would unfortunately be too much of a spoiler to disclose.
